When you apply the HSE, the aggregate filled surface of the hotmix asphalt holds HSE in place until it reacts
with the exchange sites.
HSE’s naphthenic emulsion is drawn into the weathered asphalt surface and replaces the “light solvent
fractions” (lights) that have been lost due to oxidation and age. HSE slows down oxidation by reducing
the available surface area for “lights” to escape.
The more “lights” you save, the longer the binder will last and the longer that treated section will take to shrink and develop problems.
HSE’s naphthenic emulsion is a carrier for the co-polymer mixture. As the naphthenic emulsion is drawn into the surface,
the co-polymers are carried into existing surface voids thus sealing them. The co-polymers remain flexible. Basically, the
only way to remove these co-polymers is to mill up the surface.
